What makes a gaming computer?
Some stores take a normal computer and add a medium graphics card and call that a gamer.
I call that a computer that can play games. (Usually not that well). What you really need is a Custom Built Gaming Computer.
The Parts.
A proper Gaming computer needs to be built in a case that has room for large graphics cards. It must have a Power supply that can handle the power requirement of at least one decent graphics card.
A good motherboard that can take 2 graphics cards is important, if you want the option to use SLI or Crossfire.
It should have at least an I5 or equivalent CPU. If you are on a real tight budget, you can get away with an I3, but you would need to have a really good Graphics card.
You really need a minimum of 8 GB RAM, and it helps to have a decent hard drive, 1TB at least. A solid state drive is nice. With prices falling they are now a must for all computers they make a huge difference to the performance.
The graphics card is almost the most important part, and you should spend as much as you can on this item. Running 2 or more cards is nice, but unless you have deep pockets, one single good card is the way to go.
The Peripherals.
A good screen is a must, as large as you can afford, and check out the refresh rate if you want to avoid motion blur.
If you want your keyboard to take the pounding from years of gaming, then a mechanical keyboard is a must. These have mechanical switches rated in millions of key presses. Another option is to buy a couple of cheapies, and throw them away when they die. The same with your mouse, mechanical buttons will last a lot longer, Oh, and no wireless, the LAG will mean you’re dead before you know it.
Speakers or headphones are a must. But if you want to catch that guy creeping up behind you, you really need surround.
So yes there is a lot to think about when putting together a Gaming Computer. Beware anyone who is selling one for $700 or $800, they are cutting corners somewhere.
If you want to know more drop in and have a chat, we build our computers in Wodonga. We source our parts from distributors in Australia. So this means we get good support from them. And we keep more money in Australia.

Hi Guys,
I’m in the market for a new computer. My current system is an i5 Win 7, with a GTX 1050 graphics card.
Have two problems.
First is budget – it’s limited.
Second is that almost my games are old sims, eg European Air War, Red Baron 3D, MiG Alley, IL-2 1946 etc. All pre 2005. – XP and Win7. The most modern ones are Wings Over Flanders Field BHAH II and IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles series, which are 2018 vintage.
Don’t need a super flash system to play modern games, my interest is combat sims above. And if possible I’d like ti use whatever can be taken from current system to keep costs down.
Can you help?
Cheers
Jim
Hi Jim, we can work with you to keep costs down, a lot will depend on what your old computer and its parts are like.
It will depend on the age of your CPU, anything older that 8th gen won’t be able to run windows 11, so it will have
a limited life span, Also the type of computer we build has some impact on costs. A basic computer will be slightly cheaper, but with a graphics card will play games ok.
But if we build a “Gaming” computer it will be dearer as we will use a larger case with bigger power supply. Also the actual budget will make a difference.
if you email me some more details on sales@exactcomputers.com.au or call on 0260565746. I can go over the finer details.
